Game Controls

Additional notes on control options:

Touchscreen

This is the most customizable control mode. By default, there’s a single on-screen joystick on the left and a "fire" button on the right.

The joystick in "Move" mode controls walking in all directions-forward, backward, and sideways (strafing). The joystick in "Walk and Rotate" mode allows only forward/backward movement with rotation, similar to how the joystick and cursors worked in the original UBEK on the Amiga (and many other old games before independent movement and rotation became standard).
You can have two joysticks-one for movement and one for rotation—like on a typical gamepad. You can also disable joysticks entirely and move and/or rotate by tilting the device.

"Azimuth Control" (also known as “Gyro aiming”) helps precise aiming by rotating the phone left/right. Unlike tilt control, the gyroscope “does nothing” when you stop moving the phone, making it easier to handle. However, it can’t fully replace other rotation methods, as turning 180 degrees in-game would require physically rotating 180 degrees.

The "fire" buttons are optional. Even if disabled, you can always shoot by tapping the screen where you want to fire. When using the "fire" button, shots always go straight ahead.

Joystick and tilt sensitivity options are self-explanatory. Higher sensitivity means a smaller joystick area that reacts to smaller movements. On a small screen, you can’t use low sensitivity, as the joystick would be too large to fit.

The "Floating Joystick" option makes the neutral point appear where you first touch the screen, meaning you must slide your finger to move. This way, you don’t have to hit the exact center.

Gamepad

When using a gamepad, you can assign functions to the left and right sticks, though usually "Rotate" is on the left and "Move" on the right.

As with touch controls, "Walk and Rotate" mode is the old setup without strafing.

Gamepad control works on phones, Windows, and Apple TV.

Mouse and Keyboard

Typical shooter controls: movement with WASD, aiming and shooting with the mouse.
Alternatively, in keyboard-only, left keys WASD rotate, and right keys IJKL move, similarly to the gamepad joystick layout.
Fire with Ctrl.

Mouse and keyboard (or keyboard-only) mode works on Windows, iPhone/iPad, and Apple Silicon Macs (by installing the iPad app on Mac).

Apple TV Remote

There are two remote versions, both not ideal for UBEK, but playable.

The newer silver version has convenient directional buttons but no tilt or azimuth control.
The older black version uses a single touchpad instead of direction buttons—you press specific areas to simulate directional input. Its biggest advantage is tilt and azimuth control capability.

Touch movement works on both versions.
On both, due to the limited button count, you must manually activate computer-control mode by pressing the "up" direction (on levels where computer appears).
